The #5, is a spacious electric SUV that effectively offers consumers a Mercedes SUV at a more accessible price. Smart is now owned by Mercedes and built in a joint venture with Geely (owners of Volvo, Lotus, and Polestar), combining Mercedes design with Volvo components.
Impressive Dimensions and Design
At 4,705 millimeters with a 2.9-meter wheelbase, the Smart #5 exceeds both the Skoda Enyaq and Mercedes’ EQB in size, rivaling premium crossovers like the Audi Q4 e-tron and approaching BMW iX3 territory.
The design features distinctive “oblong shape signatures” throughout the vehicle, with mirrored front and rear styling. Smart touches include chunky brand logos and frameless windows carried over from smaller models.
Two Distinct Variants
As we know, the #5 comes in Premium and Summit Edition variants (there could be more variants when it launches on the UK official site). The Summit Edition includes an “Adventurous Collection Package” with a roof light bar, roof rack, side steps, protective underfloor shielding, and a retractable ladder for accessing roof-mounted items—ideal for outdoor enthusiasts.
Range and Charging
Equipped with a 100 kWh battery (Smart’s largest ever), the #5 provides up to 740 kilometers CLTC range. Its 800-volt architecture enables super-fast charging from 10% to 80% in 15 minutes. However, due to the lack of an 800-volt charging facility, let’s just call it around 25 mins for a normal UK supercharge.
Premium Interior Experience
The interior features a Sennheiser 20-speaker sound system, oak trim, “zero gravity” front seats, and door-mounted seat controls similar to Mercedes-Benz vehicles. Two 12-inch screens span the dashboard. Yes, you heard it right, two 12-inch screens powered by an AMD V2000 chip that supports a generative AI. The back seat legroom is very spacious and the seats are very comfortable.
Innovative Features
Unique features include a removable Sennheiser speaker that doubles as a portable audio system and a built-in projector capable of displaying content up to 230 inches in size at distances of 2-7 meters—perfect for outdoor entertainment.
The spacious interior can accommodate a full-length mattress when seats are folded, enhancing its versatility for adventures.
Performance and Versatility
Expected to feature dual motors and all-wheel drive, the #5 offers both on and off-road driving modes with adaptive settings for various terrains including sand, snow, and mud.
Pricing and Availability
We think UK pricing suggests the Premium could start around £44,000 (about the EQA price range) and the Summit around £48,000 (about the EQB price range). However, considering the UK luxury car tax implementation starts on 1 April 2025, the price tag may position the Smart #5 as a premium vehicle and directly compete with similar Mercedes and other major brands of SUVs. Currently, the Smart #5 is not available on the UK car market but we expect this car to launch soon.
