Smart #1 Review: Mini Electric SUV with Big Personality

The Smart #1 is a mini electric SUV that combines impressive driving range with substantial power and surprising practicality. This compact crossover offers a distinct design that sets it apart in the increasingly crowded electric vehicle market.

Pricing and Variants

The Smart #1 is available in the UK in four different versions with competitive pricing:

  • Pro: £31,950 (including VAT)
  • Pro+: £35,950 (including VAT)
  • Premium: £38,950 (including VAT)
  • BRABUS: £43,450 (including VAT)

The Pro+ comes with 19-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, a panoramic glass roof, and a 12.8-inch infotainment screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

We recommend the Premium trim for most buyers. The Smart #1 Premium provides a longer range (273 miles versus 260 miles for the Pro+) thanks to its more efficient motor and heat pump system. The heat pump is particularly valuable in UK winters, maintaining range in colder conditions. Additional Premium features include LED Matrix headlights, a Beats sound system, automatic parking assist, and a 10-inch head-up display.

The BRABUS model is an all-wheel drive performance variant with unique styling, a dedicated Brabus drive mode, and sports seats.

Design and Interior Space

The Smart #1 measures approximately 4.2 meters long with a relatively long wheelbase that translates to generous interior space. Despite its compact external dimensions, the Smart #1 offers surprising roominess for passengers.

The rear seats provide ample legroom and headroom, even for taller passengers, and can slide forward to increase boot space when needed. The boot capacity is modest but practical, with additional storage beneath the floor for charging cables.

Technology and Controls

The centerpiece is a large 12.8-inch infotainment screen that controls most vehicle functions. While visually impressive, it presents a learning curve due to its menu structure and the absence of physical controls for common functions.

The Premium trim’s head-up display provides critical information without requiring the driver to look away from the road. Other thoughtful features include a wireless phone charging dock, USB-C ports, and a cooled center console bin.

Performance and Driving

The Pro+ and Premium models feature a 264bhp motor driving the rear wheels with 253lb ft of torque. The BRABUS version adds a second motor at the front axle for all-wheel drive and significantly quicker acceleration.

The driving experience is enjoyable with good balance through corners. The rear-wheel-drive layout provides natural handling, and the steering is light and accurate. The regenerative braking system offers three different modes but doesn’t provide full one-pedal driving.

Battery and Range

All versions use a 62kWh battery pack. The Pro+ delivers an official range of 260 miles, while the Premium extends this to 273 miles thanks to its heat pump. For DC fast charging, all models support up to 150kW, enabling quick top-ups at public charging stations.

Taxation and Running Costs

From April 1, 2025, electric vehicles will no longer be exempt from Vehicle Excise Duty (road tax). New electric cars registered after this date will pay:

  • £10 for the first year
  • £195 standard rate from the second year onwards

Additionally, electric vehicles with a list price over £40,000 (which includes the BRABUS model) will be subject to an additional £425 per year from the second to sixth year of registration, bringing the total annual cost to £620 for that period.

This makes the Smart #1, particularly in Premium trim, an excellent value proposition for UK buyers looking to purchase before these tax changes take effect.

Verdict

The Smart #1 is a fun, functional electric crossover that offers good driving dynamics and practical features. While the infotainment system requires some learning, the Premium trim represents excellent value with its enhanced range and features that make daily driving more enjoyable.

For buyers who can adapt to its technology quirks, the Smart #1 is one of the most interesting options in the compact electric SUV segment, especially at its competitive price point relative to the competition.
