The body of a newborn baby was found in a bag outside All Saints Church on Powis Gardens in Notting Hill, west London. Metropolitan Police officers were called to the scene at 12:46 GMT on Tuesday. London Ambulance Service attended but the baby was declared dead at the scene. At this stage, the gender and exact age of the baby have not been established.
Police Response
Metropolitan Police have launched “urgent enquiries” to locate the baby’s mother. Superintendent Owen Renowden described it as “an extremely sad and shocking matter” and said officers are trying to establish what has taken place. The force’s immediate priority is finding the mother, as they believe she may have very recently given birth.
Appeal to Mother
Police are urgently appealing for the mother to come forward “for her own welfare.” Superintendent Renowden directly addressed the mother in his statement: “You must feel very frightened, but please let us help – we are really worried about you and it is vitally important you get medical assistance and support. You can walk into any hospital or a police station.”
